ROMA assisted the City of San Mateo in the planning and design of a new $14 million intermodal CalTrain station in downtown San Mateo which was constructed in 2001 and included platform improvements, below grade parking, underpass, rail station, and all of the site and public space improvements.  The project has focused on the creation of a highly imagable station building in the tradition of the historic Southern Pacific stations.  The train station, which currently serves Caltrain, is also the location of a restaurant which adds additional activity within the station. The project included a 90 car surface parking lot and an underground garage for 179 parking spaces. Naturally lit pedestrian underpass provides pedestrian connection from the garage to the northbound platform, with specially designed cases for display of public art and integrated lighting which creates a sense of comfort and safety for the patrons.
