ROMA prepared the design for the original Transit Mall along the First and the Second Street in Downtown San Jose. Transit Mall provided for bus and LRT service to the downtown area, while creating an attractive retailing and pedestrian environment.  Subsequently, with the advances in design of light rail vehicles, City re-engaged ROMA to adapt, upgrade and improve the Transit Mall and to adapt the platforms for low-boarding vehicles.  For the six downtown transit stops, ROMA developed design that minimizes disruption created by the need to insert elevated transit platforms for three-car trains and allows for uninterrupted pedestrian circulation. Transit Mall upgrades included new transit shelters with integrated signage, elevated accessible transit platforms, and site furniture, including leaning rails at existing trees. ROMA also provided landscape specifications for the protection of the existing trees during construction activities.
